Some can be spotted quite easily even in urban areas whilst others may lead more solitary and secluded lives and may only be seen in certain areas and at certain times. Common types of British birds of prey include:
- Hawks and Eagles - hawks and eagles are known as raptors and they have hooked bills with which to catch their prey. Common types of hawks and eagles that may be seen in the UK at any given time include sparrow hawks, buzzards, goshawks, golden eagles, hen harriers, marsh harriers, red kites and white-tailed eagles.
- Falcons - there are various members of the falcon family that live in or visit the UK. These birds have wings and tails that are tapered and many have the ability to hover when hunting. Types of falcons include kestrels and peregrine falcons.
- Ospreys - ospreys are a type of bird of prey that lives on fish. The bird here has a specially designed hooked bill that makes hunting and eating fish easier. They dive down swiftly from flight to catch fish in lakes, rivers and streams.
