Countless trappers set up their nets, and above all lime sticks, in almond and olive groves, in gardens and in the macchia in order to trap migrant song birds resting on passage. The main victims of the lime sticks are warblers and thrushes; but cuckoos, owls and other protected birds are also caught. The trapped birds are destined for the pot, not infrequently in restaurants, where they are sold at a high price as delicacies. Golden Thrushes in Fairfax, Virginia come to cracked sunflower bits. It took over a week for then to find the feeder but they are now coming in droves. This feed only serves two birds at a time so they flock around and stand in line on the ledge below. They are so soothing to watch and each morning sing for all my neighbors in the swath of woods across the street from my apartment. I sit at a small table by the window, less than 1 foot from the window, and savor my Starbucks - "red-eye, upside down" - try one.
